Question:
Can I use my own psychiatrist or licensed professional counselor for my psych eval?

I've been with the therapist on and off for over 6 years intensely and I've been under the care of the psychiatrist for a year. They know me better than anyone who could give me an hour's test. Do you know if any doctors allow people to use people they already know for these psych evaluations?    — M. B. (posted on June 11, 2002)

You should be able to use your own psychiatrist- I don't see why not. He/she would know you much better than someone meeting you for the first time. It could definitly be to your benefit! I had my eval yesterday and I had to seek out a doctor on my own though I ended up asking my surgeon's nurse who I should go to since I was new to the area. Also, keep in mind that if you are not self-pay, you may need to contact your insurance company just to be on the safe side because they may ask that you see someone else (though I wouldn't think that would be the case). My Doctor did. I have been seeing my therapist (she is an LSW) for many years and she did the eval for me. She had done psychological clearance for surgical procedures (mostly plastic surgery) before, and since she knew me so well she didn't feel the need to give me the MMPI or any other standardized psychological test. It made things much less stressful!

I used my own and it was fine with my Dr. In fact, he posts a lists of points that the psych eval should cover. Your doctor may have the same thing. You can check out Dr. Wetter's list at: www.thinnerfuture.com/steps_surgery/letter.htm. If your counselor is not a Psychologist, it may be better to get the letter from the Psychiatrist. Your insurance company and/or surgeon may require someone who is an MD or a PHD. Good Luck!
