Question:
Are there policies about children in the waiting rooms??

My surgery date has been changed from December 6th to December 1st. My children will now have to come with my Husband and I. Does anyone know if Holy Cross Hospital, Fort Lauderdale has any policies regarding children in the waiting rooms? Thank You    — Christine S. (posted on November 30, 2000)

I'm afraid I can't give you any specific advice regarding Holy Cross Hospital. I just wanted to relay my experience with my children who were only 2yr and 4yr at the time of my surgery. The hospital not only allowed them in the waiting room, but when my husband was allowed to come visit me in recovery an hour after my surgery, they allowed the kids to come with him! If he had any sense, he wouldn't have brought them in, but he did, and the kids were very scared by what they saw. All the machines and tubes were hooked up to me, and I was barely conscious. I probably looked like a zombie at that point. I tried to muster a smile and give them each a pat on the head, but they backed off and were obviously afraid. I don't know how old your kids are, but if they are little like mine, I would suggest that they not come see you until you are awake and alert.

Each hospital has a different policy. Call Holy Cross and they will be glad to help. My hospital only allowed 2 people in the waiting room per patient, and over 16 years old.

You don't mention your childen's ages, but I would definitely try to find childcare for them during your surgery. This is a very stressful time for families in the surgical waiting room and young children are really not appropriate in that situation, for the sake of the other folks waiting.
