Question:
How do I go about getting approved for surgery?

Do I first have to get referred from my personal physician? Or can I go directly to a surgeon? And, what kind of preparing do I need to do, either way? (as far as papers, questions, etc?)    — Angela P. (posted on February 7, 2001)

Angela--I have BC/BS of AL PPO, so I don't know if it is the same from state to state, but with my insurance, I can go to any doctor, without a referral, that is in my network. I suggest that you start researching surgeons--this site is a great place, along with the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons (www.asbs.org)--and checking them against your provider list. I would also check your policy requirements...if they require a referral, off to your primary care physician (PCP) you go. Also, the surgeon may require a referral from your PCP. I just called my surgeon directly. Hope this helps some...Hugs, Sharon

Angela, Here's what I did: Checked out my insurance; researched the type of surgery; went to my state's peer page and found people who had the same surgery and/or surgeon, contacted them and asked about their PCP; changed insurance (if necessary) and made an appt. with that PCP as I knew they would be open to the idea of referring me to the surgeon of my choice. Now I'm just waiting to meet my PCP and get the ball rolling. Oh, and read everything you can find on this site - it's great!
