Question:
What do members do if they need antibiotics before dental work?
My dentist's office has asked what others do if they need antibiotics before dental work. I recently received a new hip. I'm their first patient with a gastric bypass who needs premedication. I'm only 7 months out and couldn't swallow the capsules. — Carol S. (posted on June 22, 2005)

I would think that the Dentist needs to be in contact with the Pharmacist.
You can take antibiotics in liquid or chewable form or even an injection.
You do need to make sure the liquid or chewable is sugar free so you don't
dump.

Hi I am 8 months out and have had to have antibiotics (Amoxicilian) Twice
for an absess tooth both times I got the capsules and did just fine. I
don't know what you would do if you just can't take capsules unless there
is a shot you could take. Shell

When I needed to take meds before a root canal, I explained the situation,
and the dentist gave me a liquid antibiotic. Good luck!

I am about 4 1/2 years post op. During that time I have had a few instances
where I have needed antibiotics for bronchitis, etc... I have been able to
take them without a problem. Zithromax works great and is small and easy to
take. What's wrong with capsules? If the outside disolves quickly these are
excellent ways to take medication. My calcium comes in capsules and is very
easy. Those of us who have this surgery can still take antibiotics with
only a small consideration to the form and size. There is no way I could
take children's liquid~it would be way too sweet and the amount required
for a dose would have to be quite large. Shelley
