Question:
They said that my blood doesnt clot very fast

I went for my pre op testing 5-11-01. They said my blood was thin and didn't clot very fast. Will they still do my surgery?I am very WORRIED!    — Barbara E. (posted on May 13, 2001)

Just listen to your Dr. If someone told you this other than you Dr. I would go with his opinion only. He will have the results and will be able to see exactly what the rate is. Also, there is another test they can take a drop of blood from you ear, yeah, really and tell the clotting factor. You take care and let me know how you do. I'll be thinking of you.

I had the same problem when I had my RNY surgery two weeks ago. I had my blood tested at the hospital four days before the surgery and my surgeon was concerned with the results. He said it indicated that my blood did not clot well and he wanted the surgery redone the day before my surgery was scheduled. I went that morning and had the test done again and he called me at home and said I had two options - either postpone the surgery to see if it improved and have a transfusion before the surgery of blood platlettes. Since I didn't want to postpone the surgery I elected to have the transfusion. It was done two hours before the surgery and all went well.

Are yopu taking aspirin or other medicine? Aspirin and lots of other meds thin the blood, as I once foud out the hard way! I was taking a cold pill that had aspirin in it for cluster headaches that bothered me from time to time, Well the heavy dose and my having divertelcosis combined to a 13 pint bleed and I really nearly died, At only 29 years old. So one possible source for poor clotting can be stff like this or herbal remedies. Your doctor should of asked you about this.
