Question:
I have a LAP RNY scheduled on 12/12/01. Should I get a flu shot now?

(Sorry about the repeat question. I didn't post the topic correctly yesterday.) I asked for an RX from my PCP for a flu shot (you have to have one here to get one if you are not a senior). Should I go ahead and get it - I know they take a couple weeks to become effective. I want to protect myself as much as possible pre-op and post-op from getting the flu. What do you guys think?    — crishsapig (posted on November 30, 2001)

I am scheduled for surgery for Dec 5. My PCP thought it was a good idea to get one. I got mine on Nov. 20th. I did not feel the greatest for the next few days, but I have a peace of mind that I won't get sick while I am trying to recover.

Yes, but I think you better get it very soon. You are pushing it close to your surgery date.

I had to wait until one month after my surgery. I would ask my doctor about it before having it. When I did have it a month after surgery, my arm was sore for about four days. I also got a pneumonia shot. They last for a long time so you don't need one every year. Not sure exactly how long the pneumonia shot is good for. Good luck and God bless you on your big day Dec 12.

Well, I got the flu shot yesterday and so far so good. No pain and no signs of side effects. I think I may have my surgery rescheduled from the 12th to the 20th though. Dr. Baggs nurse called and asked if I would mind doing this as there is a patient in need of a speedy surgery. More time for the shot to take effect I guess :-) Thanks all!

My surgeon's office told me to NOT get my flu shot. I should wait 2 weeks post op to get it. - just in case. Call your surgeon's office to see what he or she says though. Better to be safe then sorry. Could you imagine coming this far and then having to postpone your surgery because of a flu shot!~@?%* eeeeeeeehhhhhhh
