Question:
Does insurance cover panniculectomy if performed by a different surgeon?

I had my RNY performed by a wonderfully skilled bariatric surgeon. He also does the follow up procedure (Panni + hernia repair). While excellant at the RNY, a plastic surgeon he is not. I met with a girl who had his Panni procedure at it looked terrible (large dent, no belly button). I have been approved by my insurance for the Panni to be performed by this surgeon, but now I can't help but wonder if a "real" plastic surgeon would do a better job. Since I have already been approved by Tricare, perhaps they could just cancel the authorization for this surgeon and I can attempt approval for another surgeon. Also, does anyone know if a regualr platic surgeon can do my hernia repair while he is already in there? Poppy    — Poppy W. (posted on February 23, 2002)

My RNY and my panniculectomy were performed by different doctors and my insurance paid every dime. I had a bariatric surgeon for my RNY and a plastic surgeon for my panniculectomy. Love my Tummy Tuck.

My lap RNY was performed by a bariatric surgeon, and my panniculectomy and armlift by a plastic surgeon. My plastic surgeon assured me that he would repair any hernias that he might find, but fortunately that wasn't necessary. My primary and secondary insurance providers completely covered the plastic surgery. Good luck!

Dear Poppy, I have just been approved for my panni. Scheduled for March 11, 2002. My plastic surgeron said that he will do the panni and the org. surgeon would do the herina both at the same time. But thank goodness I don't have a hernia so the other surgeron won't be needed. If you have more questions please e-mail me [email protected].
