Question:
Pre-op bloodwork shows

I'm supposed to have surgery 1st week of September. My liver levels are high. I have no idea what that means but I need to see a specialist on Monday. Anyone have this before or know what it means??    — mary V. (posted on August 20, 2002)

I wish I could tell you more, but my liver levels are high and have been for years. I've had no symptoms and no one has ever tried to do anything about it. The Docs just notice it and say not to worry. Yours may be higher than mine, but for me it hasn't ment anything. My pre-ops are next week and I won't be surprised if it comes up again. My dad and grandma also have high levels for some reason.

Well yesterday when I went in for my pre-op testing the only test that came out abnormal was my liver enzime counts. I had this problem last year and for what my internal specialist says since I was tested for Hepititas and it was negative--they felt that my weight had an large effect on my count and to bring my weight down would probably bring things back to normal. So I wouldn't stress over it, but get the extra testing done to rule out certain liver diseases. Good Luck! Melissa

My daughter had elevated liver enzymes as a baby. Many things can cause this--a form of hepatitis, a fatty liver, weight gain or loss, etc. However, it is fairly normal (as I understand) for liver levels to fluctuate. I'm sure your doc will be able to provide you with more details, but it's probably nothing to worry about.
