Question:
I have developed sores on the inside of my mouth, especially the roof of my mouth

A nurse practioner friend said this could be a vitamin deficiency. I am 14 months post op and take all my vitamins, although not faithfully. For instance, sometimes In forget on the weekends. Anyone else experience this? AND could it be just a virus or something? I will check with my doctor in two more weeks at my appointment and don't want to make an emergency appointment. Just wondering if anyone can give me some feedback. Thanks    — Annie H. (posted on January 9, 2003)

it CAN be a virus. It could alos be due to vitamin deficiencies. Can you call your MD office and describe what you have to them to get an opinion on the phone??

That happened to me once pre-op and it was a virus. They were little blisters in my case. It took a round of antibiotics and an anti-viral drug to clear them up. It could also be a vitamin deficiency. You don't want to let it go if it's a virus, though--it will only get worse and more painful. You need to let a doctor look and see if your labs need to be done.

Do you also have them on your palms and foot pads? I had hand, foot, and mouth disease a couple of years ago and it was very painful and hard to eat until it cleared up. My poor daughter had it first and she kept complaining about her mouth hurting. Being clueless, I kept correcting her saying, "You mean your throat," thinking she had a sore throat. By the time I realized that she really meant mouth, she was over it and it was my turn. I looked it up on the net and it basically said there's not much that can be done. It goes away in a few days on its own. It is just unpleasant for a while.

I used to get sores in my mouth when I took multi-vitamins. The only kind of vitamin I could tolerate was pre-natal. That is still what I take.

It may be yeast after the inital cottony stage. Your doc can prescribe a swish and swallow. To be on the safe side I would change toothbrush and keep it (new brush) away from rest of family's brushes until resolved

How do you take your B12? When were your last labs and what is the number? Not "fine", but the number? Do you take two multis? Do they contain B1,2,3 and 6, along with everything else but the kitchen sink?

Hi everyone and thanks for your replies. A friend of mine, a physician's assistant, told me to buy children's benadryl (liquid) and maalox and mix them together to make a swish. And then told me to swish at least three times a day. It worked! My sores are going away. I will still mention the problem to my doc when I see him but I thought this was some good information to pass along to the rest of you to store in your library of knowledge. Ya learn something new every day......Thanks again. Annie
