Question:
Has anyone had spinal anesthesia for the RNY surgery?

I have had a Duramorph spinal for two other surgeries and loved the pain relief it gave. I am being told it wouldn't work for RNY.    — Brenda V. (posted on March 25, 2003)

Brenda, Is this the spinal that has moraphine injected into the spine?

Spinals dont work for this surgery, it must be a general anthestic although some surgeons supplement pain control with a spinal.

BRENDA, I HAD A SPINAL TO HAVE OPEN RNY, NOW OF COURSE I WAS ALSO PUT UNDER, BUT THE PAIN AMNAGEMENT WITH THE SPINAL WAS WONDERFUL. I WAS UP WALKING ABOUT 5 HRS AFTER SURGERY AND WALKED EVERY 2 HRS AFTER THAT OR EVERYTIME I WAS AWAKE. ITS THE BEST ASK YOUR DR. OR ANETHESIST ABOUT IT.

If you are having LAP surgery (not sure about open) you have to have general anesthesia. During the surgery they fill your body cavity with CO gas to expand it which causes a partial collapse of one of your lungs. (the left one I think) You need assisted breathing. Good Luck!
