Question:
ANYONE TAKING PAXIL POST OP?
HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCED SLOW WEIGHT LOSS OR WHAT SEEMS TO BE A PLATEAU WHEN TAKING PAXIL? I HAVE BEEN TAKING PAXIL OVER A YEAR PRIOR TO SURGERY AND STILL TAKE. I'M WONDERING IF THIS MAY BE THE REASON I AM AT A STAND STILL WITH MY WEIGHT LOSS? — Pamela S. (posted on June 18, 2003)

i have taken paxil for 9 years and post op for 18 weeks. i have lost 81
pounds----dont believe it is slowing this down any and due to the side
effect of preventing migrains----well you would have to pry my hand from
the little gold bottle!

I have been taking Paxil for 1 yr. and had my WLS 4 1/2 months ago. I have
lost 68 lbs I really feel it's the Paxil that's slowing My weight loss
down. It's not uncommon for me to go 2 wks without loosing a pound.

I took Paxil in 1997 and gained 30 pounds in 3 months, so I give it credit
for putting me over the edge for having to have this surgery. I would not
touch it ever again due to the weight gain I experienced...and my doc
finally admitted that he learned that is the effect it has on women.
Wellbutrin is an antidepressant that is actually in studies to help weight
loss. I worked for me. If anxiety is the problem ask about Klonopin. I
take two of those a day and stay calm as can be! I went off the Wellbutrin
before surgery and my moods feel no differnt. Anti-depressants are evil
with the weight!

I take 10 mg of Paxil per day. I had surgery 12/23/03 and I'm down 88 lbs.
I used to have terrible panic attacks before taking Paxil. I dont think
it slows weight loss down, I average about 6-8 lbs per month now.

I work for a psychiatrist and she says Paxil will cause weight gain, she
doesn't prescribe it to her overweight patients.

I was taking Paxil for 2 years and gained 60 pounds. Paxil by far is the
WORST antidepressant out there on the market for weight gain. Not to
mention all the other side effect is causes (ex. sexual side effects)
I am now taking Celexa and it's been wonderful. I've been taking this
medication for 1 & half years and I really like it much better.
So, my suggestion to you is ask your PCP to change your antidepressant.
There are TONS to choose from!
