Question:
Reward Ideas Needed Please!

I am 6 1/2 months post-op. I have been treating myself each time I reach a major weight loss goal. So far, I have treated myself to tanning, pedicure, manicure, jewerly, new clothes, new hair style, hair professionaly colored and a new job. I am running out of ideas. My next goal reward will be a massage. I have 35 lbs to go after that one. My ultimate reward is a trip to the beach. Please pass along any suggestions you have. I appreciate your help. These added rewards along with weight loss really have increased my self esteem. Thanks    — june22 (posted on July 16, 2003)

How about a trip to Victoria's Secret for some extravagant undies? Just an idea? Or pick out an outfit that you wouldn't want to wear til you reach that goal - for me new clothes are always the greatest treat. One of my biggest tools for inspiring myself was to make a list of things that I wanted to do physically and couldn't and then to check them off as I accomplished them. Do you belong to a gym or have a good bike? Maybe that would be a good reward - or joining some social group. Since you are healthier and feeling better and have more energy, how about volunteering for some worthy organization. I don't think our rewards have to be "material" - some of the most rewarding things we can do involve helping others. Hope this gives you some ideas.

Congratulations on your success! Have you thought about rewarding yourself with things you never tried before BECAUSE of the weight? I know that because of my low self-esteem, there have been many things i've held back from doing for fear of people's reaction to my weight (i know that nothing would really happen, but my low self-esteem tells me i would be made fun of). One of mine is to finally try singing in front of a bunch of people (maybe karaoke, or maybe even an open mic night) instead of just to myself. Just a thought, and good luck with whatever you decide!

How about a membership to a nice gym, or line dancing classes....these are things I'm thinking of after my panniculectomy/mastopexy (Sept 12, 03). Then I'm off to get a belly button ring (I'm living my teens now in my 30's since I missed out on them in my teens..lol). -Keep up the hard work...it's definately not easy..but oh so worth it. -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 282/135/125

I too set up a rewards system for each major goal. I reached my first one of a new hair style. Next come a manicure. When I reach the century club, I am taking my husband to Sybaris - a very nice hotel that has themed rooms and pools in the rooms. It is very expensive and I have always wanted to go. I also thought of teeth whitening, trip to 6 flags - since I will fit in the rides. I choose rewards that I wouldn't normally do for myself that help my outward appearance which I think might help my self esteem, or fun things to do.

Gosh, and I thought my new pair of earrings every ten pounds was extravagant....

I got contacts at the century mark which was also my dropping out of morbid obesity. The contacts were less than a sucess though because I needed reading glasses with the contacts. Sigh. Now I have ten pounds to being out of severly obese and merely obese and I will die my hair blond (professionally done - I have the appointment so I have to really work). When I get to 200 pounds which I haven't weighed in over 25 years I'm planning to get a tatoo and when I get to my goal of 180 (no longer obese - just "overweight") I'm planning to go have photos done a Glamour Shots. Other ideas: How about a make-over? Find a local Mary Kay consultant or go to Merle Norman or the department stores. Buy some new make up - Spend some money on your skin - Mary kay skin care is awesome. How about new shoes - my feet have changed size, a new purse? Take a college class in something just for fun or a craft class at a local fabric and craft store. Good Luck.

Brenda, I'm 13 months post op, I first started with the nails, and pedicures, and moved up to tanning, did the hair thing too with every goal met and kept. I too am about 17-20 pounds away from my personal (Goal weight), I was thinking that I would continue to reward myself with all the small stuff, the tanning and the nails, I don't get my hair done as it's thinning (Still) on and off again... I also gave myself, 2 different necklaces at my 6 months mark, at my 1 year mark, I was going to get a belly peice, always wanted one, but opted not to do it,,,, If I ever get a TT it would vanish..by belly button would dissapear... My next reward will either be, a TT or a (.) (.) Boob Job. as in the proccess of loosing all the weight I've lost all of my chest. That'll be my next reward !

How about a facial, expensive perfume, a good book, membership to a health club or even set aside some money for that new wardrobe.

How about having a family portrait made including your kids and grandkids and you! I am still pre-op and NOTORIOUS for hogging the camera in an effort to stay out of pictures. I was looking thru our family album the other day and I was so sad to realize the album makes it seem I'm not a very big part of our family. The professional family photo is one treat I want after surgery. Good luck to you!

The other ideas are cool, but here's one you may not have considered. Cosmetic contact lenses just to change the color of your eyes occasionally. Just a thought for somethng ginchy.

I've used the "reward trip" to Victoria's Secret, and I must say it was one of my favorite rewards thus far. I also really like the family portrait/glamour shots idea--Lord knows I avoided the camera like the plague just a year ago. My next reward (when I reach my goal weight) is a small, tasteful tattoo (whoever said previously that they were living their teens now--me too)! If I maintain my goal weight for a year, I'm planning on a cruise! Good luck to you.

Something you've NEVER done before. I want to skydive! I want to rollerblade. I want to do all the shopping for some HOT, SEXY clothes. Photo shoots are a great idea! I'm also planning to volunteer at a library where I can read to young kids (they can be all too honest when you're obese). A tattoo is on my list. And I'd love to lease a motorcycle and go for a weekend trip (don't want to own one, just the experience). I've hit 50lbs and with another 80 to go, I have time to think about more ideas. Good luck to each of you!!!

HI - I am about to reward myself in the fall with... Bungee Jumping and Parachuting! In the spring of 2004, I plan to get a motorcycle...or, at least my motorcycle license so I can rent one when the urge to ride hits me! These are things I love to do that I just couldn't do being fat. However, I have to say this, everytime I sit somewhere comfortably, cross my legs, wear a sexy dress or get checked out at the grocery store... I feel rewarded!! Have a great day!!!

How about an arrangement of your favorite fresh flowers? We always seem to give them as gifts to others. But rarely do people buy fresh flowers for non-occasions. You can have a florist make an custom made arrangement from one of your favorite pieces of glassware. Or you can buy your own cut flowers to make an arrangement. (P.S. I'm not in the floral business) (lol) Congrats. on your progress and best wishes on continous success. Anne Kirby

Hey! I'm 5 weeks post op and I also have a series of gifts I want to give myself. For every 40 pounds I lose I have thought of the follow things: Lasik surgery (to get rid of my glasses that I've worn since 5th grade FOREVER), professional teeth whitening, laser hair removal (for my embarrasing facial hair under my chin and above my lip), manicure, pedicure, glammar shots, and finally a tummy tuck and breast lift. :)
