I took my medication up until the night before surgery, it all depends on what kind of meds they are. And after my surgery I resumed my anti-depressants and such within a few days. Alot of meds also come in liquid form, but I have no problems swallowing pills.

I take thyroid replacement. I stopped taking it when I went into the hospital. After I came out I started to take it again, but I now chew it up before I swallow!

I take several med, a blood pressure pill, a diabetic pill, Effexor XR cap, liquid Prozac, chewable Flintstones, a folic acid pill and metrotrexate 4 pill once a week. My arthritis doctor told me to stop the metrotrexate for one week before and one week after surgery. My Effexor XC can not be crushed, chewed or opened so I will be replacing it with something else. I will be taking my meds up until the surgery date, then I will be crushing them when I get home. My surgeon told me I can start taking pills a month after surgery. He has given me a RX for liquid pain med for to have when I get home. I hope this info helps. good luck. Carolyn

I took my medications tbe morning of my surgery (with the blessings of the hospital staff, they just had to know that I did and that I used the smallest amount of water I possibly could to swallow them). I began taking my allergy pill and my anti-depressant the next day while I was still in the hospital. They gave me pain pills so I figured I could take my pills too. I did just fine and haven't had a problem with taking any pills since. I am almost 3 months out and have lost 59 pounds so far. Good luck to you and God bless you.

I thought I would have to take liquid prozac while in the hospital and afterwards for awhile, however, I was given my prozac in pill form in the hospital and never had a bit of trouble. Only day I missed was day of surgery.

Terri--I was able to take medicine until the night before surgery. My doctor did not stop any of my medication. But remember ALL dcotors are different and it also depends on what you are taking. and on the second day after surgery I was taking medicine

I took my estrogen the night before and my blood pressure med the morning of. They had me stop my glucophage the morning before surgery. After surgery they thought I was running a temp and then some bright nurse inquired about hormones and that was indeed the source of my "temp". Fortunately, I had packed ALL of my RX medication in a plastic baggy and put in my suitcase so the hormone problem was immediately resolved and temp returned to acceptable range. They crushed my pills and I still do crush any pills that I am taking. I put them into a teaspoon, add water and swallow. Then follow with a few more sips of water and my chewable vitamin.
