Question:
I had blood work done to have everything checked

I was shocked to see the results of my cholesterol. it was higher than when I was at my heaviest. I am 7 weeks out and have lost 30 lb at my 1 month check up. my cholesterol was 211 at my heaviest and good and bad cholesterol was at normal ranges. this time it was 226 and the good cholesterol was low and the bad was way up. I cant understand this. eating right , losing weight and exercise should be the best for this but it is the opposite for me. I dont eat very much at meals, very small portions and of course no sweets and no breads at all. my doctor put me back on lipitor. I really thought my health would improve. has anyone had this problem, if so did your cholesterol go down eventually? I am so upset that I have to be back on medicine. I know I need to get it down but what else could someone do to correct it other than what I have been doing? thanks for any help melinda    — taterbug898 (posted on January 21, 2005)

I am not sure exactly. However, I would expect that it has something to do with your liver function. Early post op, it seems that liver function can get out of whack, but corrects itself over time. Cholesterol levels can be a product of liver function or fat metabolism. I certainly wouldn't panic or expect this to be a long term issue.

High cholesterol is not always associated with obesity. There are plenty of normal weight people that have high cholesterol and have to take the drugs. It may be genetic and not related to your body weight at all. Not the response you probably wanted!

Your liver is in overdrive to process all the byproducts from fat burning. It could be that the rapid weight loss has something to do with your lab results. Ask your doctor!

Melinda...I don't know why this happens, but it happened to me and my friend also. Pre-op, my cholesterol was 180 and good and bad was well balanced. Now, one year later, my cholesterol is 224 and the good is too low and the bad is too high. No one has an answer for me and my friend said the same thing happened to her. My surgery was one year ago and the increase is 44 points and her surgery is 21 months ago and hers is also 44 points higher. And again, no one knows why this happened to her either.
