Question:
How is a Dexiscan test done?

I am going in on tuesday for a dexiscan bone density test.If any of you have had one done would you please explain to me how it is done. Is it done in one of those big machines like a cat scan? Thanks for the information.    — Nancy S. (posted on October 19, 2001)

Hi Nancy, I had a partial one done earlier this year. First I sat in a chair beside the table and they positioned my shoulder and arm several times and took x-rays of them. Then I had to sit in a chair and put my foot in a box-like thing on the floor. They took several pitures of the ankle and foot. Next I was to lie on the table for the rest. That was when they checked and found out the table had a 300lb. weight limit. That was the end of my dexa-scan. If you are concerned that it is an enclosed scan, it isn't. They just move the machine over the top of you. Hope this helps. Carol Beam

The usual dexa-scan is of the hip & lower spine. You like comfortably on a padded xray type table and the machine moves over you. It's over before you get a good nap going.
