Question:
What do you think about a big AMOS get together?

With all of the petition talk on the board I want to throw out an idea and see what everyone thinks. I know some people that are working on putting together a convention for all of us on obesityhelp as well as all of those pre-and post ops that have actually never heard of this site. They are thinking of a two day event with surgeons, seminars, speakers and a big party. Kinda of a chance for all of us to meet each other in person, and have some fun. It could bring a lot of attention to how many of us there really are out there backing this. They have been asking some of us post ops how many people do we think would show up and I am not sure what to tell them. What do you think how many of us would be interested? i havent been reading the board lately but here is my two cents. last summer was the asbs (american society for bariatric surgery) convention here in las vegas where i live. it was so fantastic to network with pts, professionals and businesses involved in wls. next year it is in boston. this event takes years in advance to prepare since it is so big. my advice is to try to coordinate the amos event with this event. the people who run asbs are fabulous people. why reinvent the wheel. all the docs and specialists will already be in one place. amos was there and i was surprised that their booth was so small, although i know their involvement. behind the scenes was huge. obesityhelp.com coordinated my participation as a volunteer. just a suggestion. also if you are interested in a las vegas conflab, my sister does just this sort of organization at mandalay bay. patsy in las vegas

Linda...I think this is a wonderful idea and probably would generate a HUGE turn-out! (pun intended...lol) I'm still pre-op but the love and support I have received from strangers here and on my local support site has been awesome to say the least. Maybe we could get a special rate on travel/hotel, etc. by organizing with a travel agency? I know that a lot of people would want to come and some do spend quite a bit just to get the surgery. If this idea comes to fruition, perhaps AMOS would consider putting it on the Home page so we all know when it's coming? =) Great idea Linda! Count me in!! Kim

I think this would be fantastic! Im sure it would cost a lot to put one on but what would be nice is one for the people in the western states, ie...Vegas, one in Florida, maybe one in nashville, tennessee, and on the east coast. This would be great for people who have families and can't afford to travel from the east coast to the west coast, And if some people like to travel and can afford it, go to all of them. Count me in!

I'm in Alabama and since I am a widow - I don't have a lot of extra money, soooooooooooooooo - I'd love to come but would like to know enough ahead of time to save up some money and give my boss plenty of notice for time off. I'd have more fun if we could get a lot of men there - hehe. Just kidding. Well, kind of kidding. LOL

That sounds like so much fun!! I would love to actually meet the people that i have only "met" online and I would love to have an excuse to go to Vegas or anywhere else. I know that the people I have mentioned it to were also really excited about the idea. Keep us posted on the progress!!!!!

I'd be all for it and even know a few people who would probably go. Linda, you sound like a great organizer - go for it, girl. My vote is for Vegas, too, but anywhere would be okay with me.

I would love to go to a convention for Obesityhelp.com Alot of notice would me good for the people with limited funds and large families. Let me know when and where and I will try and be there. I like the idea nd brought it to the attenttion of Lisa head of member services. How about holding it around Disney? That way we can combine it with a family vacation and make everyone happy. Plus around disney theres lots to do even if you dont like the parks and lots of clean nice low priced hotels. We can have a great time!!!!

Disney might be fun, but out of the price range of some members. How about a more centralized location... St. Louis, Chicago, Dallas .... if people want to do amusement parks, there are Six Flags parks all over the country - maybe we could do it at one of those. I just think that flying to one of the coasts could isolate things ... unless people could agree to break things down into regions. Maybe one in California, one in Florida, and one in a more central area. Dunno... just throwing out ideas.
