Question:
Why am I not dumping?

I have a long question, but please be patient. O.K. this probably sounds silly, but I'm concerned so I'm going to ask anyway. I had surgery 8/24/02 and so far I have lost 64lbs! Eventhough I'm happy about my loss, I'm afraid maybe I'm eating too much. I'm careful as to not eat too much at one time, but then I feel like I'm grazing all day long. I feel like I'm always hungry! I eat pure protien for b-fast, lunch & dinner and my only snacks are sf jello, sf pudding, sf popcicles and fruit. I get at least 80 grams of protien. In fact, I feel like all I get is protien. I've had some struggles with constipation too. I've tried stimulants, prune juice, fiber-con and the such and still not moving! I'm confused. I thought food would move through a bit more frequent after surgery. This past weekend I did something I shouldn't have. I have never experienced the "dumping" syndrome. I drank a can of Code Red Mt. Dew and 3 doughnuts. I know it was wrong, but I didn't anyway, and no this is not and will not become a habit. However, I did not get sick. I never thought I would want to get sick over surgar and caffiene, but now I'm concerned that I'm doing something else wrong. I would appreciate any feedback, ideas or opinions. You are not alone. I am 4 1/2 months out (-95lbs) and I do not dump on anything (except scrambled eggs...go figure). We are just some of the lucky (or unlucky) few that will not have "dumping" to help keep us on the straight and narrow. It sounds like overall you are doing fine, so try not to stress too much. Oh, and you might try Benefiber. Good luck! stress too much

Don't be concerned that you don't dump. The only thing I've found that makes me dump is soy products (must be payback for all those jokes I made about health food.)

Arlene, I'm a believer in, if you are hungry, eat. Instead of your 3 meals a day, perhaps you should try switching to 5-6 mini meals, mostly concentrated on protein. You should also add other things to your diet besides protein, like some carbs(yes, complex carbs like beans, multi-grain breads are OK in small amounts) and try popcorn for a snack. Popcorn has lots of fiber and keeps ya regular. I have a cup or two of popcorn most nights and have never had a constipation problem. As for dumping, many of us do not dump. I only dumped once and that was from liquid sugar- a Starbucks white chocolate mocha coffee. My surgeon said liquids enter your system faster and things like milkshakes, etc that are pure sugar will cause you to dump big time. What you proved to yourself by having those doughnuts is that you will have to practice some self-control when dealing with sugar.
