Question:
Am I considered a lightweight?

Hi all, I am about 5'4 1/2" and 267. I have read before that people at my weight are considered lightweights. Does this mean I will lose weight slower? Is there anyone else out there that started out around my size and was able to get to goal? Is 135 to small to use as a goal weight? Thanks in advance folks!!    — Kelly R. (posted on July 7, 2003)

Hi. I started close to where you are at 5'6 and 259. Today just over 8 months out I am down 100.5 lbs and from a size 24 to a 12. Yes it has slowed but I did well for a lightweight! Good luck, we lightweights can do well too! Wendy

I think that 135 sounds reasonable but you may change your mind as you go. It is more about how you feel than the number on the scale. As far as the "lightweight" thing goes... That one always cracks me up! Do you feel light? I never did at 277 but I have heard that I was a lightweight one too many times. I think that people say that we lose slower but I have noticed that percentage of weight lost seems the same no matter where you start. P.S. I am down 96 pounds in 6 months. You will get there so fast your head will spin! Good Luck!

I started at 255 and 5'6". I am down to 173 in 4 1/2 months. I am hoping to reach the upper 140's. When dieting on my own years ago, I went to 135. I think your goal with surgery is definitely realistic. Good luck!!

Hi.....I was considered a "lightweight" weighing in at 259 and being 5'5". My doctor's gola for me was 145....I reached that by 8 months and then went on going. I am now weighing in at 125...gaining back from 115. I feel great. I now have to eat many little meals and eat some of those bad foods to keep my calories up so I don't lose. Who would have thought I would have to worry about keeping weight on. Hope this helps and good luck to you.

I loved being considered a "lightweight" - It was a major boost to my self esteem...how sad is that??? I started last April at 255lbs. and just this week hit 154lbs (ideal range for my 5'6" height - go me!!!). I am now wearing a size 10. I was on some major plateaus from h*&$ (I thought I'd never get under 190 or 180lbs.) but in time, it has come off. I am not even trying these days...course I haven't been really trying throughout my journey. Had I been an exercizer/total protein eater/water drinker from day one, it probably woulda come off a lot sooner...I am always amazed by those people who can lose it all in 6 months. But the journey has been fun anyway. Good luck to you...

i was considered as a light weight woth my 5'3" and my 297 pounds... my bmi was 51... lightweight... dont ever want to be a heavy weight if this was light... now let be serious... nobody except your body knows if you will lose slower than others... i am 18 month out and still have 20 pounds to loose before the surgeon goal... this includes the 5-10 pounds i will lose in reconstructive surgery ! some people are already at goal and were operated at the same time and weighting less than me...

I was a lightweight at 5'2 and 248 pounds. I think you are too. You should have no problem hitting 135. I was at 125 in about 10 months.

I don't think there is any official definition of "lightweight". I've always heard it referred to with people around 250 pounds or less. I think your close enough! Its funny, isn't it? Probably only time in our obese lives that we will be referred to as "lightweight". As to whether you can get to your goal of 135...absolutely. Your surgery will get you so far, and with good habits and some work on your end, you can get anywhere. But you may want to not get fixated on that particular weight. Sometimes its better to see your progress, how you look, your new size etc, and then adjust accordingly. 135 may be too small for you and you may find 150 a more comfortable weight to sustain. Remember, the lower the weight, the less calories to sustain, meaning less to eat. Judge for yourself when you get there!

Hi! I don't remember being referred to as being a lightweight by any medical staff. They always referred to me as an M.O. female however, I did consider and was afraid that I would be considered a lightweight and NOT qualify for this surgery. I am 23 months post op and started almost like you are now. I am 5'4 and was 276 and am still 5'4 HaHa but, I am now 140 lbs and loving life. Feel free to check out my profile and if, you have any questions feel free to ask. Good luck to you!!!!!!!!!
