Question:
I'm looking for Type 1 Diabetics that have had gastric bypass.

I am a type 1 Diabetic who has had open rny (06-23-03) and I understand that there hasn't been many of us to have this done. I would like to know how you are doing and if your insulin has made losing a slower task?    — Zipper R. (posted on May 4, 2004)

Hi Tracy, I am 5 mos postop and a type I. I was on a tremendous amount of insulin pre-op and now take 4U of long acting in the morning and 4U at night. I check blood sugars in the morning and they are in the 80-100 range. I don't take any Humalog because I eat so little carbs and haven't had any problems there. I had my first HA1C yesterday and am waiting for the results. I've lost 67 lbs. in 5 mos. - I started at 233 lbs. I think that is a little slow, but I think I feel and look fantastic! (Went from a 22 pants to a 12-14).

I've been insulin dependant diabetic for 10 yrs and just had WLS 3/15/04. I don't know if I'm a slower loser yet because of the insulin, I sure hope not, I've lost 32 lbs in 7 wks, so time will tell. I'm average in weightloss to my friends that have had surgery around the same time. My insulin requirements went from 80-100 units/day to 30-40 units/day on my pump. I would be interested also to hear from other Type 1'ers on their successes. Good Luck!

HI. I HAVE BEEN A TYPE I DIABETIC FOR 12 YEARS NOW. I HAD MY SURGERY 02/18/04 AND WENT FROM 95 UNITS A DAY TO 35 UNITS A DAY. MY SUGARS ARE STABILIZING IN THE 80 - 130 RANGE. LAST I WEIGHED I WAS DOWN 50LBS AT MY 2 MONTH FOLLOW-UP. I DON'T THINK THE INSULIN IS SLOWING ME DOWN, AT LEAST NOT YET.

I have been insulin dependent for 35 years (from the age of 9). I started out on 11/4/03 at 357 pounds, and as of my six-month anniversary this week am down 104. I don't think the insulin has slowed me down in my weight loss at all. I have dropped from 105 units per day to 45, and my A1c's have been very good. Both my surgeon and my diabetes specialist are pleased.
