Question:
Has anyone who has Crohn's Disease had the surgery? And what were the effects?

I have just been diagnosed with Crohn's Disease a couple of months ago. I don't know how or if the surgery will affect that. While it may help because there is actually less food to go through the intestines, I don't know that. Also, if it worsens in later years, the treatment is to surgically remove part of the infected intestine. Can they do that with a shortened intestine? I just need some answers, I would appreciate anything that anyone can tell me. Thanks, people.    — [Anonymous] (posted on June 14, 2001)

Oh my. I don't think there would be a doctor around who would do this type of surgery on a person with Chron's disease. That is such a degenerative, progressive condition that a person would be severely compromised. Please do thorough research about Chron's disease a good luck to you. I, of course, defer to any doctors out there who will give their opinion as I am sure every case is evaluated on an individual basis but the doctors I spoke to said "No way" YMMV.
