Question:
Is it dangerous to have this while on your period? Lost blood in surgery & on thinner

Okay, so it's another period question. I was just thinking though, you're already bleeding, you lose blood during surgery, and then you're on blood thinners. Loss of blood concerns me. My dad became anemic after his surgery and they took him off of thinners because he was losing so much blood, he developed 3 clots that went to his lungs and he almost died. Are clots heriditary?    — heddo30 (posted on March 5, 2002)

I had my period when I had my surgery (RNY). I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to ask your surgeon, but blood that you excrete during your menstral period is actually the bloody lining of your uterus. It doesn't come from any actual "blood source", like blood you would lose during surgery. Now, low iron could be a concern. That's really what you should ask your dr.

yes, clots are hereditary. my mom's mom passed away at the age of 28 due to a blod clot after having a baby. There is a test that can be done to see if you have a predisposition to blood clots. They ran the test for me before surgery because I was VERY concerned. Found out I don't have this condition, so that eased my mind a bit. Although blood clots can happen to anyone. Good luck!

The blood that you lose during your period is waste product. Your body isn't using it for gestational purposes so it ditches it right along with the ova. It has nothing to do with the blood running through your veins.
