Question:
Which one is better...biotin supplements or biotin shampoo?

I want to try and get a head start on this (eventhough I wont be having surgery for another 2 months). Is one better than the other? And where can I get the shampoo? I;ve asked my hairdresser and Sally's Beauty supply and neither has it.    — emilyfink (posted on March 21, 2002)

I use the biotin capsul. I empty the powder from both into my protein drink in the morning since they are too big to swollow... My hair stopped falling out and I am getting regrowth. I notice a difference in my hair loss within two weeks. It was really bad prior to taking the biotin. I believe what we put into our bodies is better than coating the hair shaft and folicles with shampoos. I am 7 months post op from RNY and down 80 pounds. Hope this helps.

I am over 2 years post op... and I have used biotin shampoo and conditioner from pre op testing to this day... I love it! You can purchase the shampoo and conditioner online at drugstore.com... maybe they will have the capsules too... Good Luck to you...

Hi Emily! The shampoo is actually a full treatment. It is called Nioxin and has a shampoo, conditioner and a scalp treatment. You use the shampoo & conditioner as directed then put about 6 dots of the scalp treatment around the perimeter of your face at the scalp and work it into the hair and comb through. Makes it tingle. You can get it at the hair salon at Walmart. GNC has the biotin tablets or capsules. Good amount to use starting I'm told is 500's. I am pre-op and I'm using all of this now. I'm told also that most hair loss doesn't begin until about month 3 or 4 and usually ends by 6 or 7. GNC also has a product: Hair skin and nails which many people really rave about. Hope this helps! Good luck to you. Andrea

Hello! Well I am two months post op and noticed two weeks ago that my hair was falling out. I ran as fast as I could to GNC and got the Biotin 2500mcg, the strongest pill they had. I suck on the pill until the case starts to become gummy and then I swallow it. I have now noticed NO hair loss at all. You can always empty the powder into a drink if you choose. Good luck. Oh, and I also use Clairol 5x shampoo and conditioner...it strengthens the hair you do have to resist breakage and darnit if it's isn't WONDERFUL...and it was only $4 a bottle.

I don't think if any of these products actually prevent hair loss, but they sure can't hurt. However, since hair grows from the inside out, my guess is that the pills are actually more effective.
