Question:
I may have lupus. Can I still have surgery?

After insurance approval and many blood tests, I just found out that I may have Lupus. Will this prevent my surgery. I feel fine, but I am worried about correct healing from the surgery?    — shari S. (posted on May 14, 2002)

Hi Shari: I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus about five years ago and am happy to report that I had an open RNY on February 20th... There was not a moment that any of my health care providers had any hesitancy to approve the surgery. Keep in mind that I am stable, and NOT on any steroids. Hi, I'm sorta new around here, but wanted to put my 2 bits in. I have lupus and sjogren's syndrome. On July 8th I am having a Lap Rn&y. Actually I am having it done so that my lupus will go into remission. My dr. actually suggested it. So, go for it!

I have Lupus and had an RNY in Sept. It is a big decision and I would suggest that you take your time in making it. In my opinion it is important that you establish for sure whether or not you have Lupus, and if so how severe it is going to be. There are several drugs used in treating Lupus that you will not be able to take after WLS. The more important one being steroids. I can't take them for other resons, so I wasn't ever on them. You also will not be able to take most anti-inflamitory medications (motrin, nuprin, aspirin etc.) I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss my 800 mg. Motrin pills! On the other hand, I have lost 112 pounds so far and it has taken a great deal of pressure off of my joints and relieved a significant amount of pain. I know how it feels to want to have your surgery, like yesterday! In your position, though, I strongly recommend waiting until you establish for sure if you have Lupus and your doctor feels it is under control. God Bless you, it will not be an easy decision. There will be pros and cons and you will have to make the best decision for YOU.
