Question:
Has anyone used headphones during surgery...

to listen to soothing music/sounds? I have heard that some people use hypnosis prior to surgery to help aid in the healing process, but I was wondering if anyone had tried anything else, and if so.... what? I'm having an open rny on 8/6/02 and am trying to get all info together. Thanks!    — Dana B. (posted on June 25, 2002)

I did not but I almost did. According to "Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster" by Peggy Huddleston, her book comes with a relaxation/healing audio tape. They strongly encourage you to listen to the tape during surgery and to tape a note to your gown with a list of comments you want to hear your anethesiologist to say to you like "You are doing wonderful", "You will fully recover", etc. I used the book and tape alot pre-op but when surgery came I didn't. I felt I was prepared enough PLUS I thought I surgery team would think I was nuts if I did all that.... The tape did help with breathing exercises, etc. Best of luck to you.

I would think it would be more helpful to listen to relaxing tapes in the recovery room, rather than the OR, since (hopefully) you will be too dead to the world in the OR for that type of thing to matter! LOL

BTC told me to bring my favorite CD to listen to in the OP. I took Faith Hill. During the final prep they were playing some other CD that made me want to get up and dance. The anesthesiologist asked me if that was my CD, I told him 'no' and that was it... I was out! I had only gotten to listen to a couple of lines of the 'dance' CD :( As for the prep room, I was too nervous, and getting way too chatty, to have listened to ear phones, lol! It's a good idea though :)

I bought the book and tape by Peggy Huddleston-Prepare for Surgery, Heal faster. My date is 8/12. According to the book when we are 'out', our minds are very active and can hear all that is being said in the OR. She gave an example of a lady that was referred to as a beached whale by her surgeon and that it had a negative effect on her recovery. So I am going to give the anastesiologist(blew the sp Im sure)the paper and I have recorded Mrs. Huddlestons tape onto a new cassette and then added my favorite relaxing music onto it and then recorded the 'statements' repeated at the end. I bought the book and tape from BArnes and Noble...I've done self hypnosis-self healing cassettes before and I guarantee it works. I could not get pregnant for 7 years, I tried the tape (not Mrs. Huddlestons)and within 2 months I got pregnant...I focused the "healing" on my reproductive system and BOOM...I had a little boy then a little girl. These tapes do work.

I wasn't allowed to wear anything with metal on it into the surgical suite. I wonder if you would be allowed to wear the headphones.
