Question:
I'm 2 weeks post-op LAP RNY. How soon can I lift weights?

My surgeon's instructions were to rest for the first few days post-op, then there were no restrictions, just do whatever felt good. I was going to go back to my weight-lifting class (light weights) this week, but some of the other posts I've read make me think I'm going back too soon. How soon after LAP can I exercise? I'm already walking 3-4 miles a day since day 5. How soon can I start doing abdominal exercises (crunches, etc)? Thanks for all of your input! There is a lot of confusing/conflicting information here! :-)    — Angie M. (posted on October 11, 2002)

Your right about different doctors giving out different advise. My surgeon said no stomach type exercises for 6 weeks and no lifting any heavier than 5 pounds for the first month. I actually waited a good two months before doing anything other than walking, then added yoga, then light weights..

It all depends on your surgeon, I am 2 mos and still haven't been cleared for this yet.

I had open by-pass but have had lap surgery 2x since. I was not to do anything abdominal 6 weeks min and lifting over 10 lbs for almost 2 months each time. I would definitely confer with the trainer at where ever you exercise also. If you wish to start, maybe they can get you started on exercising that will build not damage by just working other parts of the body until you are past the stomach restrictions. Believe me, you do not want a hernia and they are still posible I believe even with lap surgery. You just wouldn't get an incisional hernia but there are many types of hernia. Lap surgery is still major but just not as invasive to the abdominal wall.

I think this is the hardest thing for Lap post ops. We feel great in your recovery really soon. What we forget though is that the inside is still healing. I think for the majority the recommendation is to wait 6 weeks. Best wishes.
