Question:
shrink liver?

I have read a few times on this site about dieting pre-op to shrink the liver. Can someone please elaborate on this?    — marianne J. (posted on April 18, 2003)

Espically for LAPs the usually fatty liver makes surgery harder. So some surgeons require or encourage a variety of pre op diets. My surgeon doesnt and I am eternally grateful for that. Those 6 weeks of milk and such, I would of found a different surgeon.

My surgeon requires 2 days pre-op clear liquid diet. This is because when you eat the liver swells, making the area which the doctor has to work in (under the liver) unable to get to. The length of time that you have to do clear liquids is completely up to the surgeon. I think my lucky stars that mine is only a 2 day-er instead of a week! Surgery date is around the corner!! My doc put me on a diet based loosely on the atkins diet pre-op to shrink my liver. But no milk products. I don't know how it all works but it did.
