Question:
Did anyone else watch the show

When I watch this show it was nice to see some of the Hollywood stars that have had a gastric bypass. But then they started talking about "plus-size models". These models were size 12,14,16! Since when were those sizes classified as plus size?? I just last week was able to get a pair or 16 regular jeans on and was so thrilled that I was finally into a normal size, then I watched this show and was very dissappointed that the world still classifies these sizes as "plus". Anyways just wanted to let some steam off.    — Mini Gadget (posted on January 6, 2004)

Oh I completely understand where you are coming from. One of my biggest beefs with the clothing industry is when they lable a size 12 as XL.????!!!!! I can't tell you how many companies I have written to in outrage. WHat is even more disgusting is that a size 12 as XL is the standard for exercise clothes. Hello???? It makes it kind of discouraging to try to exercise when it is hard to find sweats in your size. Congrats on the size 16!!! I can't even remember the age much less the size. You go, girl!!!

the problem is that the clothing industry has been inching up the sizes for the past fifteen years. I have a size 12 from many years ago and it would be the equivalent of an 8-10 now... i can easily fit into most 12's, and some 10's at 5'9" 162lbs. after 17 mos post op. i am at the top for the bmi, I am not complaining, but i do realize that i am at the higher end of the healthy weight for my height

The clothing sizes are NOT right. When I was around 13 years old I weighed 123 and wore a size 14. So it's very obvious they are playing with the sizes.

Bridgett, Can you tell me what show you watched? And some of the Hollywood stars that have had the surgery?

The show was called " Hollywood Diet Disorders", it was on either VH1 or MTV. It talked about Carnie Wilson, and Al Roker, and I am not sure of his name but he is on the show Ed. It was a really good show. I just did not like the fact that they keep refering to people that were a size 12,14,16 as plus. Even the model Emme, who the world considers plus size is only a size 12!

This just shows how out of touch with reality Hollywood is. In a way, I guess it makes sense, since "regular" size models are wearing size 2 or 4! If regular size is 2 or 4, then plus size probably would be 12! Crazy, isn't it?

I think its actually worse than that. Models have to be size 0/2/4/6. Plus sizes are actually less than size 12 now and extend to size 16. What most of us would consider the "normal" range, is not "normal" to the fashion industry, its considered plus size. Rene Zellweger gained 30 pounds for the sequel to Bridget Jones and is on the cover of People this week and looks just gorgeous and curvy-perfect in my mind, but the talk is that she would never work in Hollywood until she loses that weight-she is considered fat or heavy in Hollywood.

I just saw an ad for a gym in the paper that had in big print next to a very slender woman "joined at size 16," like it was such a sin to be a 16!! Believe me, after sizes 26, 28, and 30, I prayed for the day I would be a 16. Today, I am a 12 and very thankful. And do you know what? Many men have made very nice comments about my figure, loose skin and all. Do I consider myself "plus" size? Well, I will know my journey will be complete when I don't care what anyone thinks, or what the "standard" is. What matters most is what I think and what I feel. If you feel good, then forget all that "Hollywood" stuff. There are plenty of men out there that will appreciate you for you. I think what men find attractive is a woman that cares about herself, and takes care of herself. Eating right and exercising is a real good start. They don't care what size pants you wear. Just my humble opinion. Valerie open RNY 8/26/02 275/167/??

I agree that the clothing industry has been playing with the sizes. And still are. I wear a 6/8 from most stores (Eddie bauer, Gap....) But wear a 4 at Old Navy, and sometimes up to a 12 in other brands. I never considered + size to be +size till size 16, and I think that is the general populations view of it as well. Not that 16 is big by any stretch of the imagination! The fashion industry has no concept whatsoever that there are or have ever been people that wear a size 20 *GASP* The consideration that someone a size 12 would be plus size is obsurd!

There's just no sense to the sizing thing. I needed a dress for a fancy ball. I usually wear a size 16 these days, but I found a long, black dress in a 14 that fits fine. The only problem is that it has spaghetti straps, and I'm not at all comfortable with my arms, so I went looking for a jacket to wear over the dress. Found one. Size 6. Now, I'm a little smaller on top than bottom, but there's no way I can get into a real 6 anything. The 14 should be too small. The dress was a more mainstream brand, while the jacket was designer. By the show's standards I am both "normal" sized and plus size at the same time.

I have everything from a 2 to a 14, and they all fit. I had to let go of that whole size thing as best I can. I recently tried on jeans from Costco. The 4's were too big, but in another brand, 5 was just right. USUALLY I wear odd sizes (thicker middle, less bottom). And the evens don't fit as well. But in Gloria V, it works. Go figure. Cannot touch Calvin Klein in any size. They are built for people with a tiny waist and more generous hips and thighs. They look like riding pants on me! LOL! Don't hang your star on a label or you'll lose your mind for sure. LOL!

Sadly, they have the nerve to call size "12" a plus size, then say Calista Flockhart and Lara Flynn Boyle TOO thin. So what is right?!??! No wonder so many women have eating disorders. And so many worry about what everyone cares what everybody else thinks of their bodies - they feel like they are under a microscope all the time!
