Question:
Has anyone one out there had the gastric bypass procedure and now revised it ?
Hello I am 39 years old and when I was 15 years old I had gastic bypass surgery with a revision one year later. This surgery kept my weight down in my high school years in the 200's but now I weigh over 450 and because of health problems and inability to lose weight and keep it off I have made the decision to try the Fobi Pouch procedure. My doctor says that since it has been so long ago since my last surgery that there should be enough collaterol circulation developing in that area to prevent complications such as leakage, etc. Is there anyone out there who has gone through or are going through this surgery or the RNY procedure with a history of past gastric surgery? If so please e-mail me with what to expect and how things have gone or is going for you currently. Any feedback would be helpful. I am not changing my mind about having this surgery but I am nervous and I want to know what I may be up against from the patient's perspective. — Jill F. (posted on June 17, 2002)

I don't understand how you could gain all that weight. Were you told that
this is only a tool and not a cure all? I think that wls surgery should be
reserved for those that are dedicated to making life changes.I am very
sorry that you are having health problems and I hope that you work with
this new opportunity and become the beautiful and healthy person that you
want to be.

Grace, that was a hurtful and judgemental post. I love constructive posts
but not disrespectufl posts. Go ahead sweetie try the surgery again. I

Grace, I am floored that you posted that response. If someone said to you,
prior to surgery, "didn't we tell you not to eat that food?", how
would you have responded? Good thing you have everything all figured out
now, so that you can guide the rest of us failures. As far as the original
poster, I had vertical banding done four years ago -- and failed. There
were no support groups, limited information, a baby, sabotaging depression,
and general misconception on my part that this surgery was going to fix my
problem without effort. I am a well-educated, professional woman with a
beautiful family, having surgery in Pittsburgh only four years ago. It
failed. I failed, it failed, whatever. I had my revision to an RNY done
May 20th -- down 21 -- and working my butt off to relearn nutritional
expectations in this new circumstance. If you are ready for a revision,
don't sweat your previous history. Learn from it. Five years from now, my
money is on YOU to be a compassionate example of success. Keep us posted!

Jill please ignore Graces post, she is out of line with a post like that,
and according to her profile she has not even had surgery. I am sorry you
had to read such garbage.
If your Doctor feels you can have the revision, by all means do what you
have to do and to be healthy.
20 years ago surgery was just not as successful as it is today, Gods Speed

Jill, I apologize for Grace's response to you. PLEASE consider the source
(read her profile..she appears to be a very negative person.) I agree with
many of the other posters here...YOU GO GIRL!!! Good for you for going
ahead with this surgery, for not beating up on yourself for the past, but
looking to the future and making changes for yourself! My money is on you

I also think Grace is out of control, as my mother would have said "If
you don't have anything good to say, say nothing at all". She should
relize that not all surgery turns out perfect. (FOOD FOR THOUGHT) I keep
thinking, what if Grace had your problems, just what would she do?? mmmmm

Apparently what I had to say came out the wrong way. I did not intend to be
judgemental or critical. It was an honest question. As you know I am pre op
and I was thinking that anything she could tell me might keep me from also
regaining my weight. I don't know anything about the surgery from long ago
and I was asking if her doctor told her it was a tool, I am truly sorry
that it was taken the harsh and rude way that it was.I want only the best

GO FOR IT! As I'm sure you know, there have been tremendous breakthroughs
in the past 10-15 years that could make your tool more effective. Weigh
your options and choose the option that will help you the most. My prayers
are with you!!!************For anyone who is learning about surgery
-Scientists have now proven that obesity is genetic and not caused by
parents feeding their children the wrong foods. I don't know about
everyone else but I grew up on apples, tomatoes, and grilled meat-(my
mother was on a diet her entire life also.)

I have not had a revision. I am only scheduled for my rny in July. My
advice to you, and I don't know if you want it, is to please research Fobi
completely. I don't want to scare you, but my surgeon told me the national
death rate from weight loss surgery is .5% and last time I heard, Fobi's
was 2%. Please consider all the surgery methods. Get a second opinion
first. From what I have heard, Fobi would practically operate on anyone.
And his billing system is a little shady.

Hi Jill. I am pre-op and have my consult soon. I was going to have the RNY
but decided to have teh Duodenal Switch. I am also around your weight.
468lbs to be approx. I have researched all procedures very well and I think
the Fobi Pouch would be the last one on my list. I would rank the DS as #1
and RNY second. But that is for me and the goals that I have. Please
research as much as you can and dont forget about support groups. they are
such a help. If you go to www.pacificsurgery.com or pacificbariatric.com
they will tell you alot about the RNY procedure. If you go to Duodenal
Switch Information Zone that will tell you alot about the procedure I will
be having. I hope everything works out for you but please reconsider the
Fobi Pouch.
