Question:
How long are you in hospital? (4 open and lap, is it the same?)

It all depends on you and your surgeon. I had open RNY on Oct 16, 2001. I
expected to stay in the hospital for 3-4 days,,but I was doing so well that
my surgeon let me go home 24 hours after my surgery. He came in my room,
saw me sitting "indian style" on my bed and said "this is
silly, you have 2 options. You can stay here for the night or go home and
be comfortable in your own bed. I chose to go home. My advice is....take
your recovery in your own hands. Walk, walk, walk in the hospital. Good

every doc is different
mine required 6 days total (check in night before surgery)
definetely walk as much as possible in hospital..that really helps
good luck!

Lap surgery is less invasive, hence, less time in the hospital if no
complications. I had lap and was in for 2 days - surgery late Friday
afternoon, home Sunday by noon.

Your length of stay in the hospital will vary for each person and
each doctor!! I am old (59) and have diabetes and was kept
for 6 days because of that and my blood pressure acted up too.
My wife (53) had the same problems and was kept for 6 days.
We both noticed that the "young" folks were released earlier
than us. They were also up and walking much faster than us.
We both had open rny's and so did all the other patients
in our ward. So it just depends on how fast you heal.

I had a LAP RNY on 8/15 and was discharged 8/17.

Laps tend to be shorter than opens. 2 days Lap for me and my wife each. Big
difference is that 30% of opens get at least one hernia and require another
surgery. Incisional hernias in LAPS in near zero....

I had lap on a Friday and out of hospital on Sunday noonish...and I was
back to work Monday mornining...I only missed 1 day of work.

(OPEN) Surgery on Tuesday, discharged Friday. Three days/nights of a living
hell. GET A PRIVATE ROOM! It would'nt of been to bad if not for the
%$%&@#() roommates.
LAP would probally get you out much sooner.

I went in the hospital on Monday and had the open surgery that afternoon.
I returned to my room that evening. They had me walking by 1:00 AM On
Thursday I took the "leak" test and was finally allowed to drink!
By Friday I had all my IV's and drain tubes out, could walk fine and went
home at noon. Good Luck

I had a Lap RNY on a Monday afternoon and was home by suppertime on
Tuesday.
