Question:
Is bowel surgery a common after surgery related to the R-N-Y?

I am post op two years and last month had to have scar tissue removed from the the small bowel. I had to go through the ER and was in excruciating pain. For me, the owrst side effect from the surgery has been the horrific gas and stomach pains. Does anyone know anything we can do to get away from so much gas? It is killing me, not to mention how embaressing it is even around my husband. It's like suffer inside or fart. Most of the time, I suffer. Antone who has any suggestions, please email me at [email protected]. By the way, other than that-I have no regrets. In have lost 145 pounds and have gone from a size 28-30 to a size 6-8. I am 48 and would give anything to have ten years of my life back but I am so thankful for this new life I have!! See my profile.    — Sherri R. (posted on January 18, 2004)

Adhesions can occur after any bowell surgery. Its a small risk, but very unpleasant. As to gas too many carbs or sugar free stuff can do that or make it worse. Gas X or other things can minimize it and the smell.

You can get bowel adhesions from the surgery. I also had them from my first c-section which he had told me gave him a problem during my second c-section! Any time they touch the inside organs it leaves "impressions". And yes, I have had that pain also, and have been in the ER for it. I thought I was dying!! After reading your post, I am afraid now that mine will start all over after having the RNY!! Best of luck to you.

I'm pre-op, but I thought I'd add that lately I've been trying soy nuts and other low carb, sugar free products to see what tastes good and what doesn't appeal to me...anyhow I'm not sure if this is something you can use...but my gas level has increased terribly. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the foods. Hopefully you will get some relief soon. Take care~ Jenn
