Question:
Do any of you have physical problems from surgery?

I asked my family physician what he thought of the bariatric surgery. He said several of his patients had the surgery done and they were having trouble physically. Do any of you long termers out there also have post surgery problems?    — [Anonymous] (posted on November 13, 2001)

Yeah, I've got problems from surgery - I can't eat very much at one time! (That was the whole point of the surgery, wasn't it?) But seriously, folks, even though I'm only 8 weeks out, this is infinitely better than dying slowly but very surely from some co-morbidity!

I am having problems physically, but they are totally my own fault. I have been completely ignoring my needs as far as vitamins go. I haven't been taking my multi or my iron or my B-12. I also have trouble getting in all the water I need so I am feeling dehydrated and a little run down. I am having my labs drawn next week and will try to remember to take all that I need from here on out. If you are committed to taking all you need, you won't have any problems. Good luck

The four of us in my family who have had RNY surgery are between 9 and 22 months post-op and all within 20 pounds of our goals. We are healthier, happier, and more energized now than we have been in many, many years. We had no problems whatsoever with our surgeries, and have experienced none since. We would all say to you that this surgery has been the best thing that we ever did for ourselves, and for those who love us. We would do it again in a heartbeat....no regrets! Best wishes to you!

Sounds like his patients who had the old surgeries from years ago. Staple disruptions, ulcers, and kidney problems were some of the bad complications. With modern surgeries these arent a problem. Long term studies show that post ops are healthier, happier, and generally do well. I know LOTS of long term post ops, and my talking personally with them verifies the studies I have read. To get a even better answer attend your local support group meetings and you will see these folks in person.

I had an open rny almost 4 years ago and I'm so healthy it's disgusting. I never even vomited after my surgery...not even once. I've had no problems and all my labs have been 100% normal. The vast majority of the people in my support group never have any significant problems. I
