Question:
Has anyone had problems having a baby BEFORE surgery.

I have not had surgery yet, but would like to. The problem is that my husband and I would like to have a baby first and we've been trying and trying, and the tests keep coming back negative. Is this a common problem for women who are MO? If you can tell me anything I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you.    — Heather B. (posted on March 31, 2002)

Obesity causes MANY women to be infertile- Hormones are stored in fat and when we have too much fat in our cells the hormones don't distribute correctly, causing infertility. Check out PCOS- a hormone and insulin related 'disease' that many MO women have (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrom). Symptoms are weird periods, facial hair, discolored skin patches, 'skin tags', and infertility (among others). Weight loss may make PCOS go away, which is why some women conceive rather quickly post-op when they were infertile before. My doc has already given me the safe sex talk becuase I WOULDN"T have been able to get pregnant before, and now it would probably be easy. I can't tell you when the right time to have a child is- but it's my opinion that it would be easier to get pregnant after you have lost weight (and going through fertility processes can be long and expencive). If you don't want to wait you may want to see an endocrinologist about fertility help. Good Luck to you!

Heather, I think it all depends on your general health. With me, I was considered morbidly obese when I had my children and to be honest, I am as fertile as the nile valley!!! Then again, I didn't have any significant comorbidities at the time either. I was generally in good health (except for the weight)with no hypertension, diabetes, etc. It wasn't until after the kids were born and I had my tubes tied that I started to experience more health problems. Then again, I guess I was also getting older too...so who knows. Everyone is a bit different I guess. Good luck with everything!
