Question:
Is there anyway to get insurance to cover a Psycalogical Eval?

I am getting so frustrated with everything. I have to somehow come up with 200.00 dollars for the evalutation with the psycalogist. It seems like this is taking forever. I am already taking Zoloft but find myself crying over all of this. Does anyone have any suggestions?    — ivory1974 (posted on August 5, 2002)

Most jobs have employee assistance program. My company did and I used it to get my psychological evaluation. We just classified it "eating disorder".

I ASSUME YOU HAVE ALREADY CHECKED AND KNOW FOR SURE YOUR INSURANCE WILL NOT COVER IT. I REMEMBER ONCE A LONG TIME AGO, I NEEDED TO SEE A PHYSC DOCTOR AND I CALLED THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT AND EXPLAINED I NEEDED HELP AND DIDN'T HAVE COVERAGE. THEY WORKED IT OUT FOR ME. DON'T KNOW IF THEY WILL IN THIS CASE, THAT WAS A LONG TIME AGO. BUT ITS WORTH A SHOT.

I have BCBS HMO and my surgeon worked with my PCP. All my pre-ops were done through my PCP. BCBS denied me at first, saying they needed a letter of medical necessity from my PCP and a Psych evaluation. PCP wrote my letter, got me an appointment for psych evaluation. BCBS never said they would not pay for it. I figure it this way, if they require it, they should pay for it. I'd have fought tooth and nail to make'em. Best of lick< Jo-Dee Hortz

Natile, Who is prescribing your Zoloft? If that is a Psychiatrist, perhaps he or she will write your letter for you.

I would first try to go through your PCP to get a referral for a psychiatrist. They could list the reason as depression, anxiety, or possibly even an eating disorder. Your insurance should cover your visit and while there, talk to the psychiatrist about wanting the surgery and evaluation. Hang in there! Things will work out for you. I went through my local mental health center, which is a lot cheaper if you qualify by their guidelines. It is well worth the try. Good Luck!

You don't say why you are getting the evaluation. If your insurance company is ordering it, they should pay for it. I had this same issue with my insurance. They still haven't paid for my evaluation (got sent to the wrong place), but they promised to in writing. Hope that helps. Nelly
