Question:
How many post op out there had to lose 10% before surgery ?

I keep reading about all these people with last supper syndrom and it seems like not every one has had to lose 10% befor surgery. It just so unfair my doctor is so strict she driving me crazy and some of the other people in our support group too she postponed my friends surgery 2 already because she could not lose the weight. I hate this 10% thing it frustrateing to me.    — sheri B. (posted on September 8, 2002)

Sheri...trust me- I feel your pain. I, too am required to lose the 10%. I thought I had. I went for the consultation with the nurse beforeI can even meet the surgeon and I'm still 10 lbs OVER (my scale at home was off by 10 I guess) I was so disheartened that istead of pulling myself up by the boot straps (huh?) I just started eating as I normally do. I now have 15-17 lbs to lose. Some people can eat til the cows come home before their surgery...this is redculous. I suppose if I want the surgey bad enuf, I'll do what they require, right? YOU ARE NOT ALONE...Vicki B (pre-op-UCSF-Dr. Marco Patti)

Hi Sheri...Kaiser Northern CA requires AT LEAST a 10% weight loss before surgery, and more if you are super MO. So I know what you're going through. I dieted for 3 months before my surgery and managed to lose 15 lbs. (the doc said lose between 20-25). I was TERRIFIED the surgeon wouldn't do my surgery, but he did. Take a look at my profile...I was so upset and depressed pre-op. It felt like torture to try to lose weight, but I tried my best. Also reading online about all the last suppers people were having made me have to get off this site for a while. But, let me tell you, that 15 lbs. lost got me started on a "better" program of eating before surgery, and made it a bit easier afterwards. My liver was not "fatty", my gallbladder was fine, and my surgery had no complications. There's something good to be said for the discipline you gain for having to lose that 10%. Hugs, Joy
