Question:
I am about 1 1/2 weeks out and need to find a protein drink.

I have tried several that I bought from GNC that came highly recommended from them but couldn't get them down. I need some suggestions on something that tastes decent and doesn't smell so bad. Not being petty but they just made me sick to my stomach. By the way, down 21 pounds.    — Tonya H. (posted on May 19, 2003)

I like the Real Meals too. At first I could tolerate nothing chocolate and the vanilla thankfully was very yummy an eventually I made in the blender with a couple of strawberries which is delicious! Very high quality protein!

Hi Tonya! At the very beginning I couldn't tolerate or like any of the protein drinks but at 5 months out I bought a smoothie machine and the protein powder MetRX chocolate and have been drinking it every morning since. You can go to my profile under Pam S in Cahokia IL about 3/4 of the way down I have some protein drink recipes. Good Luck!

I love the Designer Whey - Chocolate. I whip it up with a hand held mixer and add a few ice cubes. It gets thick and frothy and has just the right amount of sweetness. I got mine at the Vitamin Shoppe and they also sell it at GNC.

Real Meals - 60 grams of protein so you can break it up into a couple little shakes in the beginning. Their website is www.protein-solution.com

I like the stuff at www.i-shophere.biz. They are fruit flavored powders you add to water, and taste like koolaid. They don't have that awful protein smell. Each has 70 cals and 15g protein.

i tried all these that the other posters mentioned also. The only ones i can tolerate were right in my back door. Walmart has a kind that is premixed. EAS Advant Edge Carb Contol. Comes in several flavors pre-mixed. 0Sugar 99% fat free, 2-4 carbs depending on the flavor and 15g protein. A four pack is 5.86.

I think that protein drinks are in the eye of the beholder (or taste buds of the beholder). I suggest you buy a lot of samples from vitalady and other sites that offer them and try several different kinds. I have followed suggestions of others only to dump things in the sink almost immediately upon tasting. I used to be a big Met Rx Classic Vanilla fan and since surgery I really can't drink it. I don't like Real Meals at all. Other old favorites like EAS Orange Jubilee sit in my stomach like a rock even though I like the taste. I have to make my protein drinks very light, meaning I must use fruit based flavors only (berry types) and add frozen berries to it. I keep it thin and drink-able. I can't do the thick drinks any more. I also find that Designer Whey Natural is a nice "base" to add other things to (sf jello pudding, splenda and berries etc). Your mileage may vary. I usually post my experience so that new postops can see that sometimes it's a process to find out what protein drinks work for you and which ones don't.

First - congrats on your loss... 21 LBS is awesome! I use Amino Infusion by Sci Fit. It is a syrup that when added to water tastes just like kool aid. Each Tablespoon has 5 grams of protein. Best of Luck!

The best protein supplement is the one that you will consistently consume...and it is different for everyone. However, the consensus that I've read on the Yahoo! OSSG Protein Pervs board is that Champion Nutrition Pure Whey Stack and ProScore 100 are the Top 2 overall favorites. I tried many samples first and settled on Pure Whey Stack in chocolate as my favorite. I also like the Proscore 100 chocolate but the Stack is more shakeable and that makes it more portable. For samples try www.vitalady.com or www.wlssuccess.com. You have to try samples, no ifs ands or buts about it! We are all different in our likes and dislikes. Also, what makes you nauseated at 1-1/2 weeks out may be fine for you in a couple weeks. Those first weeks can be rough...nothing smells good. Good luck and congrats on the 21 pounds! - Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -126lbs.

First of all, Congrats on the loss!! I have tried several of the protein powders and could not tolerate any of them. I couldn't stand the clumpiness.I have been drinking Atkins Advantage premade shakes. I LOVE the Chocolate Delite. I love it so much that I actually crave it. They have vanilla, strawberry, and cafe au late too. My hubby hasn't had surgery but drinks the vanilla everyday. I buy mine at Walmart. They are not too cheap, but since I can't indulge in much else, I allow for this. GNC also carries them, but much more expensive of course. Good luck, it's pretty much trial and error. What one person loves another will hate of course.

Champion Whey Stack - Chocolate. I tried to find a protein drink I liked for over a year, and this is the only one I can tolerate, although I've recently added an occasional Nectar Carribean cooler which is a nice change from the "milk shake" type drink.

Your taste buds will change over time. Some of the things that you cannot tolerate today, you will months from now. I like the chocolate designer whey (add 1/2 a banana and ice in the blender..yum) or the Isopure zero carb vanilla powder (add fresh frozen fruit, ice to blender). I would suggest you order samples from vitalady.com until you find what you like. For koolaid type of protein drinks, Isopure zero carb does have 20 oz glass bottles with flavors like apple melon. I found them at Vitamin shoppes-used to cut them with water, add ice, and sip them all day long as a new post-op because I wasnt ready for shakes yet.

I still can't stomach the protein shakes. All of them are nasty to me. I still to this day drink skim milk with vanilla sugar free carnation instant breakfast for a total of 12g of protein per drink. It's not a protein packed drink but the others make me sick to my stomach. I am not sure if it's the smell, aftertaste, taste, or what but I just quit wasting my money trying every one I could find. And everyone's tastes are different, what one person loves someone hates so best advice, just keep trying them until you do find one. I would also suggest jotting down what you tried, how much you paid, and what your thoughts about the taste were. This way after trying 50 of them you can look back and maybe find one that wasn't too bad afterall.

I am 6 weeks post op. I love the Real meal protein drinks. I order them online. For a new post op, one packet will make 4 shakes. It tastes good and seems to be easy on the stomach. What I did is order a week supply of the vanilla and used that-the week supply lasted for 28days-one shake a day. I now use this for my breakfast-only I add milk, strawberries and ice to it and blend in the blender- tastes like a strawberry shake- about 117 calorie, 19 grams of protein. the web site I use to order is the following: http://protein-solution.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=ORM Good luck.

Congrats on your weight loss! I'm 3 weeks post-op and I like Real Meals vanilla the best. I don't just like it, I love it! My favorite is to take 1/2 pack of the Real Meal powder, add 8oz very cold water and then add 1 rounded teaspoon of Folgers decaf crystals, and then add some ice cubes. YUMM! I also make sure I mix all of my shakes with a Braun hand blender vs just shaking them. It really makes a diference.

Designer whey CHOCOLATE is the only one I can drink. And I'm NOT a chocoholic. I used to prefer vanilla. All of the vanilla's I've tried just stink/suck in my opionion. Also, FYI, I hated nectar berry cherry. Everyone's different. But for now, I only buy chocolate designer whey. It's whey (pun intended) too expensive to "try" anything else. Good luck, you loser!!

I have found the powders the most vile thing I can drink. I am now drinking Sci Fit Amino Infusion 5000. Be sure to water it down or else it kind of heats up your tummy. I have the tropical punch and have ordered the grape. Contrary to what people say, it doesnot taste just like Kool-Aid. It is close but no cigar. I have also ordered the Nectar Proteins from Vitalady and WLSsuccess. It comes in Apple(which is suppose to taste like a Jolly Rancher), Pina Colada (pineapple taste) and the most popular Very Cherry Berry. So far that is about what I do. Oh,,,except that I eat a lot of Detour and U-turn bars. The cheapest place I have found for them is WLS Success. Good luck.
