Question:
What is the shortest period of time that someone has been back to work?

My job is only giving me two weeks off. My doctor said two to three weeks should be finew. Just wondering....    — Marisol C. (posted on June 16, 2003)

As long as you have lap two weeks will be fine. You will be tired for a few days but just take it slow. I had two full weeks after returning home from the hospital and I was ready to go back to work.

i have a friend who had open rny on thursday, came home saturday and worked a full day on monday. that is WAY too quick. i took 4 weeks off then went back 1/2 days the first week and was still exhausted all the time. it really depends on you!

Hi Marisol, I had lap RNY and went back to work on the 10th day after surgery...had surgery on a Friday, came home from the hospital on Monday and went back the following Monday. If you are careful and able to bring all the liquids that you need, you should be ok after 2 weeks. You might have to go to bed really early for a while...I did. I found I felt best if I slept about 9 or 10 hours a night the first 2 weeks back.

I had open RNY and was back to work on the 9th day after surgery. I work in transcription and sit all day, so I had no problems at all. It also helped me to walk as much as I needed to.

I asked my Dr. if it was feasible to go back to work on Monday following a Thursday surgery and he said it was depending on how laid back my work environment was. He said if they'll allow me to move a little slower and take breaks as needed-it should be fine.

Hi, I am scheduled for open RNY on July 28. I have a desk job that is very very stressful. I am taking two weeks off of work to recover. However, I did make it clear to my supervisor that if I did not feel up to working so soon that I would either work half days or not come in at all. Maybe you should do the same. It is very important that we take care of ourselves.

It all depends on what you do for a job. If you have a desk job, its much easier, however if you're working on your feet it might be way too early. Also, you never know what types of post op things you'll deal with. You can't comparable to others, its so individual.

I went back to work after 1 week, another person who went to my surgeon went back after 2 days. Each person is different. My mother in law has not gone back yet, it's been 4 weeks.

I had a lap rny 5/09/03 and have an office job. I went back to work on 5/19/03 working from home full time and it was ok :) Everyone is different my good friend just had hers and was ready to go back in 4 days and some of my friends needed 4-6 weeks. It's definitelly different for everyone. Dawn

Marisol, it will depend on whether you have complications after surgery and how your recovery goes-everyone is different. Lap surgeries usually have a quicker recovery time as they are less invasive with less cutting. I had a complication requiring a 2nd surgery and so needed a good 4-6 weeks off. I do know of one woman however, who had surgery on a Thursday and was back to work the following Tuesday (still on pain meds..) and she was a doctor!
