Question:
Calories in cherries

I have been eating alot of cherries since they came into season. Could this be the reason that I have not been losing weight lately. I have also been eating alot of watermelon. I eat these for between meal snacks. Other than fruits I have not changed anything else about my diet. I'm 6 months out and have lost 60 pounds. Thank you    — myra J. (posted on July 10, 2003)

My doctor said to watch high sugar fruits, like strawberry's, melons, etc. that they can be turned to sugar quickly which ups the carbs which slows the weight loss, but I think as a treat sometimes or in small amounts is okay. Some people dump on strawberry's, melons, etc. wish I did - ha!

I looked cherries up on fitday. One cup (with pits) only has between 12 and 20 grams of carbs, depending on the sweetness of the variety. Unless you are eating large amounts, it shouldn't be holding you back. I would say as long as you are following the "protein 1st/then fruits & veggies/then other stuff" rule cherries should be okay in your diet.

Cherry, fresh, 1/2 cups, pitted, sour: 26 calories, .5 grams of protein, 6.3 grams of carbs, .2 grams of fat, 0 cholesterol, 1 mgs sodium and .6 grams of fiber. 10 medium Sweet (2.6 oz.) pitted: 49 calories, .8 grams of protein, 11.3 grams of arbs, .7 grams of fat, 0 cholesterol, less than 1 mgs sodium and 1.6 grams of fiber As a carb choice,it is better than bread! You do the math and decide if it is what you want to put into your body. Personally, I do! :~)

12 cherries and 1 cup watermelon are both 15 grams of carbohydrate. Enjoy!
