Question:
Is the a weight limit on Lap RNY?

If so what is the highest amount you can weigh before they suggest having an open RNY? I really don't want to have the OPEN so I need to know before my first appt with the surgeon on Aug 8th so I have time to lose a few pounds if I have to.    — Kim H. (posted on July 15, 2003)

Some Dr's can go pretty high with the new specially sized LAP equipment they now have available. However, it's not just weight which determines LAP/Open. Body mass and health are also keys. The body mass of a 5'2" person at 400lbs is alot different than that of a 6' person at 400lbs. My relative was 450lbs at 5'4" and she had LAP. She also did not have any abdominal scaring to be concerned about. She is 65 yrs old and had the surgery 3 mos ago.

My surgeon does everyone Lap. He does tell you that he may have to convert to an open if something happened. I was 336 with a ton of scar tissue from an old surgery. My surgery took 5 1/2 hours because of that, but he was able to finish it lap. I know he did a 580 man in my support group also. I think it depends on the surgeon.

My dr. did a 700# person LAP the day before my consult. He must have not had any abdominal scarring though. Check around:)

My son's surgeon has done Lap on patients over 600 lbs. My son weighed 442 at the time of surgery (5'11" tall, 62 BMI), and his was a completely successful Lap surgery. It all depends on the surgeon's skills, and what instruments are available to them where they are operating. If you really want Lap, I would look for a surgeon who can do it. Don't settle for the first one you see if he/she is reluctant to try Lap due to your size. I think they all tell you that you might have to be opened, but that's to avoid any surprises when you wake up. My son was so happy that his was able to be completed Lap. His recovery time was amazing, with very minimal pain after the first day or so. Good luck with your decision.

It does depend on your surgeon. Ours said that she can do me Lap no problem (335, 5'9"). However she said that she will need to do a slightly open lap on DH. He will need a small 4-6" incision at the stomach line.
