Question:
Can anyone give me information on affects of vomitting from anestisia?
I have had four surgeries in the past and every time I wake up from surgery I throw up. I assume it is from the anestisia and I'm concerned I will hurt my new pouch if I throw up that soon. Any suggestions or knowledge of what to expect would be greatly appreciated! — Tracy B. (posted on August 2, 2003)

Hi Tracy,
I woke up in recovery horribly ill from the anesthesia. I didn't ever
actually vomit from it, I just dry heaved (I assume because there was
nothing in the new pouch to come up). The nurses were very good about
giving me phenergan, etc, through my I.V. to help with the nausea. Nothing
helped, though, until they finally gave me a shot in the hip. Anyway, the
dry heaving didn't seem to cause me any problems...and the doctors and
nurses will do all they can to alleviate your sickness so that you won't
damage your tender pouch. Good luck.

I am one who also woke horribly nauseous from the anesthesia. I also dry
heaved, but they were on standby with plenty of anti-nausea shots which
also knocked me back out. My recovery nurses were awesome and They were be
Johnny on the spot to help me. It's highly unlikely you will throw up
because you are completely empty. Don't let that bother you, it happens to
most of us and our pouches don't suffer from it. God bless you.

Tracy, My surgeon gave me medication during surgery to prevent me from
waking up sick. It worked great. I will always make sure to ask for this
in the future, should I need to. Ask your surgeon or the anestheologist, I
am sure they will accommodate you. Good Luck

I have had several surgeries in the past. I was horribly sick and threw up
several times from the first one (many many years ago). Since then I ALWAYS
tell them that I get very sick from the anestisia when the Anestisiologist
(spelling??) visits me before surgery. They always make sure to give me
some meds in my IV and I have NEVER had a problem since.

I have the same problem with anestesia (? spelling) I told the
anestisiologist this at the pre-op meeting and they arranged to put
something in my IV before I came to, it prevented me from getting sick and
worked great.

I dry heaved several hours after waking up from surgery - delayed reaction,
I guess! No damage to the pouch and they put something in my IV to prevent
nausea. Since you know this will be a problem, tell them before hand and
they can put the anti nausea drug in your IV right away. I had no further
problem once I got that. (Your stomach will probably be too empty to
actually throw up anything anyway, but heaving is still no fun!)

I always get sick after surgery. This time I really stressed my point to
the anesthesiologist(who I dont think believed the severity at first). I
even asked him to create (standing orders) so that I could be given various
anti nausea medicines throughout my hospital stay without the nurses having
to get his permission!!!! Just as they brought me to the OR and started
giving me one of the meds I got so sick. The Dr. was shocked and had to
give me the anti nausea drug before I even fell asleep. When I woke up I
immediately had the dry heaves. Remember if you have this to take your
pillow and press it against you incision so you wont rip it back open.
Even though I was out of it I remembered that without a problem. I did
continue to have bad nausea during my three day hospital stay despite the
medicines but I think it was related to the pain medications after the
first day not the anesthsia. If you have any other question email me at

Hi tracy, i am also one that wakes up extremely sick, so i made sure i told
anybody who would listen that was my biggest fear and they made sure i
received something durnig my surgery. I had a harder time waking up but I
dont remember ever getting sick, but i did wake up VERY sick to my stomach
so i remember trying to tell them when they were rolling me to a room and
they gave me something right away and it seemed to not only help my sick
stomach but also to help me sleep. The whole week i was there, I would
occassionally have the sick stomach so I am so sure it was all anthestia

I was so sick after previous surgery. Told them in advance and felt fine
after my WLS. Do tell them in advance of your previous problems so they can
get copies of your records and use something tha works better.

Many hospitals now give compazine or something else either as a per op med
right before, or during, in the IV. I took it by mouth for my 3 surgeries
previous to my WLS, and I think it was IV for that. No problems with
nausea. Ask the surgeon preop, and the anestheiologist. My wake up from
WLS was the easiest of all. The hospital was terrific,and I was already in
my bed in recovery. No moves til the next day when my catheter was
removed.

I get extremely sick from General Anesthesia! I puke my guts out violently
then get hives. I always tell the anesthesiolist before sugery. I REALLY
STRESS THIS HIGHLY. Evidently they know I am serious as I've had 13
surgeries in my life and have no reason to lie about the effects of GA. So
they now put extra "whatever it is" they can put into the IV.
Now, I rarely get sick or get hives anymore. Relief! I was extra worried
when I had wls as I did'nt want to throw up afterwards. I really stressed
my concerns because of previous surgeries. Anyway, no puking the day of
surgery. The next morning I woke up and starting dry heaving. I kept trying
to throw up but nothing came up. It would'nt stop and finally I called the
nurse to tell her. She came in and gave me a shot of something and it
stopped. I wished I had called her sooner! Anyway, make sure your
anesthesislogist knows and do be pushy. The squeky wheel gets the oil as
they say. lol They CAN give you something in the IV that will prevent or at
least help you not get so sick. :)
