Question:
Where are most incisions located?

I just had Open RNY, I was under the impression that the incision would run straight up and down on my tummy. Instead it starts at the base of my breastbone, then curves down around under my left breast, Dr. stated that it was easier to work in that position, good thing about it is that it is not really all that long.    — Barbara W. I've heard of them being done in so many ways.. there is truly nothing set in stone about how "it should be done" each surgeon should make the incision where it is best for you.. the best access, safest entry etc.

"Most" incisions are vertical usually starting below the sternum and ending at the belly button. But each surgeon may prefer to do things a little differently. I'll bet you were surprised when you found out where your incision was! That's why it is so important to ask your doctor as many questions as possible and not assume we know the answer just because we have been visiting this site. When I was in pre-op the nurse came in with a small syringe and I said, "Is that the heparin?" thinking I knew everything that was going to happen after being here for three months. She looked at me strangly and said, "no, it's the anesthetic before I give you your IV." Instead of feeling smart I felt pretty dumb.
