Question:
How long does it typically take to get a surgery date after 1st consultation?

I have had all my bloodwork done and documented, have apptmts for psych and diet evaluation and have PCP letter of recommendation; not to mention all of my paperwork filled out. I have a first consultation to see a surgeon in late April, how long will it typically take to get a surgery date. I was hoping to get gastric bypass done during the summer b/c i am a college student. thanks. . .    — Lezlie Y. (posted on March 26, 2002)

I have been working on it for some time, I also think it is up to the surgeon. I saw my final (I've seen 3 total) surgeon on 2/27, and since, I also had all of my stuff together, I just got my surgery date today! April 9th! So all in all, it only took about 6 weeks.

It took me 6 months just to get in to see the surgeon, and then an additional 2 months to have surgery. It was a very long wait. It really depends on your surgeon and how busy he is, if he has a waiting list. Looking back, it really went by fast. It will happen. Just do lots of research in the meantime.

I hope I'm an exception but I don't think I am. My very busy surgeon took 6 months to get the first appt and since I had all my ducks in a row so to speak got my approval quickly but my surgery date was still 5 months away. so 11 months

My first visit to the surgeon was 8/30/01 (only had to wait a week to see him). I didn't have to see additional specialists or have any bloodwork done. I had my insurance approval on 9/13/01. My surgery was scheduled for 11/5/01 So all in all, 2 months from start to finish.

It totally depends on where you are in the 'game,' who your surgeon is and what location/hospital your surgeon will be using. I know some people are waiting for dates in Fall 2002 and some people have their first consult and surgery two weeks later! I live in Portland Oregon and I will wait for at least 6 weeks AFTER precertification! Check out the 'surgery dates' section and you will have an idea (approximate) about how long others using the same surgeon have waited.

Thanks so much for all your input. After my first consultation, i have 4 months free forthe surgery, so I think i will be fine, if it takes longer I will wait however long b/c I am determined!
