What happen to the stomach part that is not being used to digest the food?
Well, after you stomach is stapled, the part of the stomach that is being used, what happen to it? Does it shink up or after time become a problem? Can it become cancerous? — Sandra C. (posted on April 4, 2003)

The old part of the stomach continues to produce digestive juices that aid
in the digestion of food PAST the "Y". it does shrink some but
still is working for you.

Your unused portion of stomach continues to produce acids and so forth and
as the other poster said, these are channeled into the intestines. It will
shrink a little from disuse, but never "wither away'. I doubt there is
much of a chance of it becoming cancerous especailly if you have no one in
your family that had stomach cancer or if you have never had any cancer. It
is not having anything at all coming into it that could be remotely
carcinogenic, so I wouldn't worry about that.
