It isa filter placed into a large vein in your chest to "catch" any blood clot that may break free from a clot in your legs. That prevents them from going to your heart and lungs causing BIG TIME problems. Most docs will put them in preop for any patient that has a history of blood clots or for some one who may be at high risk for blood clots.
