Question:
Anyone heard of

My hubby just got me the greatest book from the library called "Protein Power." It talks a lot about PCOS, hyperinsulimia and the problem with the food pyramid (i.e. low fat, high carb diets). This makes perfect sense to me, except that it wants you to SEVERELY limit your carbs, i.e. down to 30 grams. Is this dangerous at all? Anyone out there tried it? What were your results? It does seem to agree with the WLS way of life ...    — Terissa R. (posted on July 10, 2002)

I've been on this diet for about 4yrs off and on(you know how it goes)BUT...I always feel sooo much better when I'm following it. I have PCOS and am glucose intolerant. The whole limited carbs thing really wasn't that bad and when I do "fall off the wagon" it is because I couldn't fight the PEPSI craving. You can still have a very rounded diet you just have to pick and choose wisely and you value your carb choices more.

Hi Terissa! I purchased that same book on Monday of this week and it is a great book! Gives me some *basic* information, unfortunately I'm not very knowledgeable about carbs as yet~sorry~.

Hi, Protein Power is good but if my memory serves me, it allows you to have a "bonus" meal that does not restrict carbs. based on my experience with adding "some" carbs, that's dengerous for someone like me that had difficulty limiting sweets and starches. I had my Open RNY on 01/21/02, and have not had ANY sweets so I have not experienced any form of dumping. I also eliminated all starches, which are converted to sugar during digestion. For every gram of sugar/carb you eat, your body looks to that as a form of energy instead of tapping into youir own fat stores. Since our goal is to use fat for energy and protein to build cells I recommend really low carb diet, which is really not a high protein diet at all. My doc wants me eating protein, drinking water and if I want, eating non-strachy veggies only, but protein first. I can tell you that I now eat about 7-800 calories a day MAX and never more than 20 carbs. I've had great success, and am losing steadily. I know many people who havn't been able to lose the last 20-30% of their excess weight because they have chosen to add certain carbs, i.e. large portions of fruit, bread, pasta, potatoes, etc... Those foods will all but stop your weightloss and cause those carb cravings that lead us to eat the foods that made us fat to begin with. I'd recommend that you look at Atkins program. If you have concerbs about fats, you can choose lean proteins and do very well. If you're interested, please take a look at my website. It may be helpful: www.WeightlossSurgery.ws I'll be posting recipes soon, that work for anyone restricting carbs, including some wonderful desserts. Good luck, and if you'd like to drop me a line I'm at [email protected] Diane N

This is uncanny, I asked a question just a few before yours about the product the doctors who wrote this book created, Pentabosol. Ever heard of it? I am interested in their book as well.
