Question:
OK to travel 12 days after WLS??

I am having WLS on July 8th, and my family and I are supposed to be leaving for Vermont on July 20. Is it okay to travel this soon, as long as I take it easy and don't over-exert myself?    — Dana R. (posted on June 9, 2002)

I flew to Lubbock, TX from my home in Tulsa, OK for my surgery and then 6 days post-op back. It required 2 planes and a change in DFW. NOT fun, and I was by myself, schlepping my own bags. I survived, and you should do fine, just make sure not to lift anything at all if possible. Make sure to stock up on "emergency rations" i.e. extra drinks, water, s/f pudding, anything you can eat at that point post-op without cooking it or finding a place to shop for it. Have a wonderful and safe trip.

You should be okay, but please remember you need to stop at least every 2 hours if driving and walk around for about ten minutes, you want to protect against blood clots. Enjoy your trip

Will you be riding in a car or flying? Are you having open or lap? I had lap and I flew from Florida to Iowa 10 days post-op with no problems. I had to switch planes and everything, but things still went quite smoothly. If it hurts to walk very far, there are many airport workers around that will gladly wheel you in a wheelchair to your gates (that is if you are flying). For me, at 6 days post-op, I was able to ride in a car with no pain. If you are having it done open, I've heard that a lot of people will take a pillow and hold it over the wound to lesson the pain while traveling.
