Depends on your weight at the start. For those of us over 400, the mortality rate is 1%, or 1 death for every 100.

I've been a member of this site for about a year and 1/2, maybe longer. I can remember about 4 deaths -- all were extremely obese with really bad health problems -- and as far as I can remember, they all said they were willing to take the risk, knew they would die without this chance, and wouldn't want anything unexpected on their part to keep anyone else from choosing this option. The chances of dying from this surgery are no greater than other surgeries, like gall bladder surgery -- although obviously if someone weighs 800 pounds, smokes, has a bad heart, etc would be adding lots more risk than someone who weighs 350, doesn't smoke, has arthritis.
