Hi,

I just started the weight wise program and have completed my initial intake appointment.  I am not scheduled to see a dietitian for 2 months, seems like forever. I am anxious to get this process started!! Can anyone tell me what type of "diet" they recommend?  I have started journaling but I am unsure how many calories I am supposed to be eating as well as food to avoid? I am not required to lose the 10% of my weight before surgery but would like to if I can.  Any tips or advise you could give me would be greatly appreciated!!

HI There!

Have you taken any of the Weight Wise modules offered?  http://www.albertahealthservices.ca/info/service.aspx?id=100 7965  If not, I suggest that you do. The clinic in Edmonton, at least, really recommends that you follow the guidelines set forth in those classes.  Half a plate of veggies, 1/4 plate of meats/alternatives and 1/4 plate of grains.  Servings for snacks should include 2 out of 4 food groups, servings for meals should include 3/4 food groups.  Your dietitian can do a Medgem test for you to assess how many calories you currently burn at rest.  You can also go online and find Basal Metabolic Rate calculators like this: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ to get an idea of your base calories used before any activity each day.

I hope that helps!
