i went browsing for local groups and then national mgroups and find that most groupws start up with great enthusiasm and then become barren areas.

Are you talking about online message boards or real life support groups?

Online, this is the place to be and there are forums for a variety of surgeries, interests, concerns, and geographical locations.

IRL, many bariatric practices sponsor support groups and some don't mind "outsiders" joining them.
