Had my surgery yesterday and I am hungry today! But when I sip my protein shake it fills me up. Hungry for some substance. Was anyone else hungry the day after their VSG

Head hunger is a beast. For weeks after surgery, I would dream about food and I would have killed for a bag of cheetos.

Physical hunger often goes away after surgery, but not always. It can take some time to subside as well; your body has ghrelin floating around and it'll take a while to clear.

When ever I see some say I'm 'hungry for' I immediately think head hunger. I'm not hearing you say your stomach is growling, you feel weak, dizzy etc. I'm hearing a craving, not hunger.

When you're hungry- almost anything will do to dull the physical manifestation. Cravings are specific.

This is so spot-on Peach. I'm going to try to remember it somehow. Lord knows there are times when I can't (actually it's won't ) differentiate. This will help keep me honest.

Hunger at this point is likely due to:

dehydration
acid
your head lying to you

Drink lots, take a PPI, ignore it. :)

I'm drinking every chance I get. I can only have up to 1oz of protein drink over a half hour span.

Are you taking in fluids OTHER than your protein drink?

Yes, as SparkleKitty said, are you drinking anything besides the protein shake? I hope you are, you should be sipping water constantly when you're not drinking your shake.

As for hunger, I didn't feel any at all. I'm 10 months out, and I still never feel what I called real "hunger pangs" like I had before surgery. I can feel my stomach is empty, and I might feel a little weak and that generally only happens if it's been over 5 hours since my last meal. Then I know I need to eat something. Otherwise, classic hunger is something I never feel anymore.

Head hunger still rears up every once in a while, but I usually beat it back down with something to drink! lol
