Heartburn/Acid Reflux

Ugh!  I am having a lot of trouble with acid reflux in the middle of the night; almost every night.  I started taking two Prilosec every day on the day I got home from the hospital, and it was controlled for a while.  But in the last two months it's gotten worse.  My surgeon's office gave me a prescription for Protonix, but that does not seem to help.  They also recommended drinking a protein shake right before I go to bed in case the acid was coming up when I got hungry in the middle of the night.  Didn't help either.

It starts low in my abdomen with a kind of rumbling, waking me up.  That's my cue to hop out of bed and head for the giant Tum's bottle.  The pain hits right in the middle of my chest just below my boobs.  Two Tums ALWAYS takes care of it within about a minute, but it's very annoying and disrupts my sleep about every other night.  Doesn't seem to correlate to anything I've eaten in the day whether or not it happens at night.

Anyone have suggestions?

Nexium 40mg a day is the only thing that has ever touched the GERD/heartburn/reflux/acid issues that the DS caused me.  I now have an ulcer as well.  I use Zantac 150mg for breakthrough.

I have reflux too pre and post op. I recently had to go back on my Nexium after trying to go "holistic and natural" for relief. One thing I did find during that experiment was that activated charcoal capsules are a life saver. the charcoal is very absorbent and sucks up all the acid within minutes and escorts it out of the body. the capsules are tasteless but work wonders.

I also tried to drink/eat something before bedtime but I found that to make me have acid in the night sure as the world. I really don't eat after 700 pm or i will have breakthru sure as the world.

The only thing that works for me after my DS 8mo ago is Nexium 40mg twice a day and then Zantac extra strength.  I have had that problem on and off.  My GI Dr just gave me a new Rx which I have to pick up which is coating the esophagus. You may ask your Dr for that as well.
